WebbAccording to Cooley's looking glass self theory, the self is formed through social interaction and is heavily influenced by the perceptions of others. This theory proposes that the self is developed over time. Individuals, in accordance with this theory, form their own sense of self-image by taking cues from the responses of those around them. WebbWhereas Cooley thought that everyone that a person interacts with during their entire lifespan could influence our self-identity in some way or another, Mead thought that the process was somewhat more restricted. He thought that only certain people could influence our perception of self and only during certain periods of life.
